The Weill Cornell Medicine Faculty Appointment and Promotion system utilizes four academic pathways, encompassing two major categories of faculty members.
The first category is faculty members with primary activities of academic achievement and scholarship. Individuals in this category hold unmodified titles (for example, Assistant Professor of Medicine).
The second category is faculty members with primary activities of clinical, investigational or educational excellence. Within this category, scholarship is not the primary consideration for promotion, but it is recognized and strongly encouraged. Individuals in this category hold modified titles with the terms “Clinical”, “Research” or “Teaching”.
The decision regarding the most relevant pathway for each faculty member is a determination reached together between a faculty member and their department chair (or designee).
A faculty member’s pathway will be noted in initial appointment offer letters and subsequent appointment confirmation correspondence. The pathway choice will be reviewed yearly during faculty review).
